The first soccer player on the cover of a video game

Today it is usual to see players on the cover of sports video games. However, this was not always like that. In the case of soccer video games, the first was Pelé, considered by many to be the best soccer player of all time.

That game had the image of the Brazilian star on the cover and his name. We are talking about Pele's Soccer, a game created by the Sears company and released in 1980 for the Atari 2600.

A peculiarity of the game is that it did not face teams of 3 VS 3 instead of 11 VS 11. Why? Due to the technological limitations of those years.

Here's a TV commercial used to promote Atari's line of sports games. In addition to Pelé, we see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (basketball) and Mario Andretti (car racing).

That game had a sequel released several years later, in 1994, called PELÉ II: WORLD TOURNAMENT SOCCER, this time for the Mega Drive, preserving the same view as its predecessor.

It took 15 years for the soccer player to officially return to video games, with Ubisoft launching Academy of Champions: Soccer for Wii in 1999.

In this game, we had to create a character and learn soccer tricks at a school run by Pelé himself. Something like the dream of many footballers, even if it is virtually

The goal was to complete various challenges with teams made up of Ubisoft characters, including Rayman, Rabbids, and Sam Fisher.

FIFA Soccer and the modern era

Being one of the most important representatives of the sport, his participation in the soccer games created by Electronic Arts sounds logical. Sure, at least until this year, when his contract with FIFA ends, but that's another story,

It was in FIFA 14 when the player joined the series as part of the classic players of the Ultimate Team mode. Starting with FIFA 18, he began to have various in-game cards depicting the highlights of his career. The best of all his cards is the 1970 FIFA World Cup, a competition he won with the Brazilian team.
