The seventh art one that, despite being gamers, we can't let slide, especially when they dedicate movies and series to our favourite industry. Although they are not always good adaptations, it is always nice to have a good laugh at the expense of the productions.
At LevelUp, we never have enough when it comes to video games; that's why when we hear about upcoming film or TV adaptations, we have the urge to see every one of them, and since we want you to join this noble cause, today we bring you a list of the productions that will see the light in 2023.

The Last of Us - HBO - January 15, 2023
20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Movie Theaters - April 7, 2023
From Illumination, Universal Pictures, and of course, Nintendo, 2023 will be the year we finally get to see the next animated Mario movie on the big screen. Chris Pratt will be the voice of Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser. The legendary voice of the plumber in video games, Charles Martinet, will also lend his voice to the film, as will Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Kevin Michael Richardson.

Gran Turismo live action film - Movie Theaters - August 11, 2023
"The ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver. Based on a true story." That is the synopsis of the film directed by Neill Blomkamp which will feature the performance of David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Darren Barnet.
God of War live-action series - Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime Video's Twitter account officially announced the development of a show based on Sony's award-winning game series - Santa Monica Studios. God of War will surely follow the adventure of Kratos and Atreus from a new perspective or an original spin-off story.

Assassin's Creed live-action TV series + Animated series - Netflix
During the last Ubisoft Forward, several announcements were made regarding this franchise; in this event, it was confirmed that Ubisoft and Netflix reached an agreement to co-produce a live-action series about Assassin's Creed. According to Ubisoft, this series is just the kick-off of a more significant deal that will include other, both live-action and animated series.
Splinter Cell animated TV series - Netflix
An NSA reconnaissance squad had ongoing missions to halt the more frequent and violent terrorist strikes. Double Agent, the Splinter Cell story from 2006, follows Sam Fisher, who decided to join the expanding gang and quit his job to uncover the plot that resulted in his daughter's murder.

Tomb Raider animated series - Netflix
Written by Tasha Huo, the Tomb Raider Anime series is set after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, developed by Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. Actress Hayley Atwell will voice British archaeologist Lara Croft with Earl Baylon and Allen Maldonado onboard as Jonah Maiava and Zip.
BioShock film
A BioShock film had been confirmed and was initially planned to be released in 2011, coinciding with the release of a third BioShock game. The film was set to be directed by Gore Verbinski, director of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. However, it was announced on August 24, 2009, that Verbinski had dropped out as director because of budget issues and the prospect of filming some footage overseas. The pre-production of the BioShock film was cancelled sometime in late 2010 or early 2011. In 2022 it was announced that the film was back in development and would be a Netflix-exclusive film.
Beyond Good and Evil live-action film - Netflix
Netflix's Beyond Good & Evil movie is being helmed by Rob Letterman, best known for his recent works on Detective Pikachu, Goosebumps (starring Jack Black), and Gulliver's Travels. Rob Letterman notably comes from an animation background, with even his live-action projects heavily relying on CG to bring characters to life.
Dragon's Lair live-action film
Dragon's Lair for Netflix is a Maximum Effort production under the direction of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman; meanwhile, Dan and Kevin Hageman are in charge of the script, with Ryan Reynolds playing Dirk the Fearless.
Far Cry & Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix anime series - Netflix
Ubisoft extends its relationship with Netflix. Both companies are collaborating in developing Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, a six-episode adult anime set in the eighties expansion of Far Cry 3. Little information is known at this time, although we already know the director, producers, and animator.
Pokémon live-action series
This live-action would have a realistic style, far from the cartoons we know so well. The pokémon that will be part of the plot is unknown, but some people have already placed their bets. Will Pikachu be the main character again? Joe Henderson, Lucifer's showrunner and executive producer, is reportedly shaping the script.
Horizon Zero Dawn live-action series
The hunter Aloy is the next to reach the small screens; this makes a lot of sense, and what's better: what is told and shown in her adventures gives a lot of material and a great game -never better said- in TV series format, ensuring action, dreamlike landscapes, science fiction, giant robots, and a reckless protagonist with extraordinary charisma. This is the kind of character destined to go beyond the medium in which they were born.

Exploding Kittens animated series - Netflix
In the forthcoming animated series, the eternal struggles between Heaven and Hell come down to Earth as God and the Devil inhabit the bodies of rotund house cats.
Gears of War live action film + adult animated series - Netflix
Netflix already has the rights to create a Gears of War live-action movie and an animated series for adults. The company highlights the franchise's potential to develop more stories in the future. The topic of a Gears of War movie is nothing new; we even know that one of the main promoters is actor/wrestler Dave Bautista, who has always declared his intentions to play Marcus Fenix.
In case you missed it: After years of absence, the Overwatch World Cup will return in 2023.
As you can see, we have many incredible productions on the near horizon, which we await with open arms, but always with a grain of caution, as in the past, video game adaptations have not been very well received. It only remains to wait and see if they will meet with the players' approval.
Other video game series with previously announced movies that do not yet have a release date include Minecraft, Beyond Good & Evil, Borderlands, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, Duke Nukem, Just Cause, Metro 2023, Streets of Rage, Five Nights At Freddy's, Portal, Ghost of Tsushima, Call of Duty, Pac-Man, Days Gone, to name a few.
