Ubisoft has been facing turbulence in recent years, leading to increased speculation about a potential sale. Among the possible buyers, Microsoft has been frequently mentioned, given its aggressive growth in the gaming sector. However, recent reports suggest that an acquisition is still uncertain.

Adding to the conversation, former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden recently weighed in on the matter, questioning whether Microsoft is even capable of managing a company of Ubisoft’s scale.

Speaking with Destin (via Pure Xbox), Layden, former head of PlayStation, shared his skepticism regarding Microsoft’s rumored interest in Ubisoft.

While the idea of Microsoft absorbing another major publisher might seem logical because of its recent expansion, Layden argued that sheer size does not guarantee success. He also pointed out that Microsoft’s growing number of studios could become a logistical challenge rather than a competitive advantage.

“I look at the number of studios under Microsoft’s umbrella and think, ‘If they can actually make all of this work, good luck.’ But there’s a point where it simply becomes too big to manage. Instead of growing endlessly, Microsoft should be focusing on making the studios they already have stronger,” Layden stated.

Ubisoft’s Uncertain Future

Years of financial setbacks, internal turmoil, and canceled projects have put Ubisoft in a difficult position. Studio closures have only added to the pressure, raising serious questions about what lies ahead for the French company.

Some shareholders are reportedly advocating for a sale, but Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot brothers appear to have a different strategy. According to insider sources, if an outright sale proves unavoidable, an alternative plan could involve launching a new game studio with Tencent as a primary partner, allowing Ubisoft to retain control over its most valuable franchises while restructuring its business.

The company is currently pinning its hopes on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest installment in its flagship franchise. With a promising launch and positive early reception, Ubisoft’s executives and investors are waiting to see if its success can stabilize the firm’s position before making any drastic moves.
