Price Hike Won’t Deter Fans from Nintendo Switch 2: Ex-PlayStation Boss

The Nintendo Switch 2 is a showcase of first-party power and a test of players’ willingness to pay for games.

Saying that the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 left a bittersweet taste is an understatement. While fans are clearly excited about Mario Kart World and the new hardware features, the prices have spoiled the fun for many. A former PlayStation executive has weighed in on the issue, offering some perspective on the pricing strategy.

The Switch 2 will be significantly more expensive than its predecessor. The base model will cost $449.99, while the bundle featuring the Super Mario Bros. spin-off will retail for $499.99.

Nintendo will also introduce a variable pricing approach for its exclusive titles. Mario Kart World will cost $79.99, Donkey Kong Bananza will be priced at $69.99, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour will be available for $9.99.

Former PlayStation Boss Believes Gamers Will Pay

Shawn Layden, former head of PlayStation, has frequently spoken about the difficulties companies face when trying to balance game prices with rising production costs.

During a recent appearance on the PlayerDriven podcast, Layden addressed a range of issues concerning the gaming industry, including the controversy over the new Nintendo console.

“They poked through the ceiling of price elasticity, where we thought none existed before,” Layden said.

Layden predicts fans will ultimately pay for Nintendo’s exclusive titles.

Although Layden acknowledged the fans’ disappointment, he argued that Nintendo’s extensive library of exclusive franchises will encourage many fans to accept the price hike.

“If it’s the only place you can play Mario, then you get your wallet out and you buy into it. That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock, if you will, of these price hikes, because you want the content so bad,” he stated.

Unlike Microsoft and Sony, which have increasingly embraced a multiplatform strategy, Nintendo remains focused on its exclusive games. As a result, the Switch 2 will be the sole platform to enjoy titles like Mario, Zelda, and more.

Nintendo Defends Switch 2 Price Tag

Doug Bowser, head of Nintendo of America, recently defended the console’s pricing, highlighting new features like more durable Joy-Cons, a new LCD screen, stronger hardware, and the GameChat function.

Bowser pointed out that Nintendo considers factors like production costs, game length, and replay value when setting title prices. Despite those explanations, many fans feel that gaming on the Switch 2 is becoming unaffordable.
