Monster Hunter Wilds has become a commercial success and is on track to become one of Capcom’s most important titles in recent history. Its release was a special moment for millions of players, but one particularly emotional and bittersweet tale caught the attention of the gaming community.

A few weeks ago, a Reddit user named MrTactician shared that his father passed away just one day before the release of Monster Hunter Wilds. He explained that both of them were avid fans of the series, and it left him devastated that his father wouldn’t get the chance to enjoy the latest installment.

Like other titles from the Japanese company, the game features a robust character editor, allowing players to customize their avatars down to the smallest details. In a captivating and original gesture, MrTactician decided to use this to recreate his father’s likeness and allow him to experience Capcom’s newest title.

The result was striking. He posted a picture of both his father and the avatar he’d created in the game, and the resemblance was undeniable; what made it especially moving, however, was the way the player captured his father’s warm gaze.

“Games aren’t always about escapism for me; I’ve played many games with stories that resonate with me on a personal level. In this case, seeing my old man do badass maneuvers against big old monsters and being heroic is like having an exaggerated version of what he was to me. It’s a bittersweet feeling,” he wrote.

The post has since received over 28,000 likes and 573 comments, prompting many others to recount their own personal stories in response.

One user shared a similar experience, mentioning that his 22-year-old brother, who introduced him to the series during the Nintendo Wii era, passed away in 2010. The user explained that he stopped playing video games for a while, and when he bought Monster Hunter World in 2020, he tried to recreate his brother as a character in the game but ended up crying uncontrollably.

Monster Hunter Wilds: A Major Success

Monster Hunter Wilds has proven to be more than just another game. The stories that have emerged around it reflect the profound connection many feel with the game. Even with some performance challenges, the overwhelming support from players highlights its success as one of Capcom’s most meaningful releases.

The game peaked at 1,384,608 concurrent players on Steam, and currently ranks among the top five most successful titles on the platform. Additionally, it sold 8 million copies in just its first three days on the market.
