It’s no secret that Elon Musk is a big fan of video games. The magnate recently boasted that he can enjoy one of his favorite hobbies while flying thanks to Starlink, his satellite internet service.
Specifically, the owner of Tesla shared on X that he plays Path of Exile 2 on his private jet. This led one of his followers to imagine the possibility of playing video games on Mars with Starlink’s potential.
To their surprise, Musk replied and explained that it's entirely possible; however, he also mentioned a problem that could affect players in the distant future when colonization becomes a reality: there won’t be matches between Earth and the Red Planet.
Elon Musk says playing video games on Mars is possible
Through his social media, Elon Musk showed how he defeated the Arbiter of Ash in Path of Exile 2. The interesting part is that he did it while flying on his private jet, made possible by Starlink's connection.
“Starlink is so good that you can play real-time video games while airborne!”
One of his followers took the opportunity to say that playing on Mars with Starlink’s potential would be amazing. Musk didn’t hesitate to respond and confirmed that playing video games on the Red Planet is totally possible. However, the magnate warned players of a problem that could affect them in the future: they won’t be able to play real-time matches between Earth and Mars because the speed of light would prevent it.
“You can definitely game on Mars, but speed of light means no real-time gaming between Earth and Mars. Distance varies from ~4 to ~20 light-minutes..”
This sparked the curiosity of many players, who posted all kinds of comments, including theories, questions, and jokes about the possibility of having matches between players from both planets.
Players imagine matches between Earth and Mars
Musk is highly interested in space exploration and colonization. He has several Mars-related projects with SpaceX, which are set to begin in 2026. Following his recent statements, his followers started imagining what it would be like to enjoy video games on the Red Planet.
Some people took it humorously and claimed that matches between Earth and Mars would be possible, as long as there was “an Ethernet cable between the two planets”. Others argued that the lag would be massive, making it impossible to play.
The community believes that turn-based strategy games would be the ideal option for playing matches between planets, as real-time action would be impossible with today’s technology.
