Like it or not, The Game Awards has a significant impact on the industry. It’s not just the most prestigious stage for honoring the best games of the year and revealing major announcements, but also a platform that shines a spotlight on certain titles, boosting their sales significantly thanks to the media exposure.
Recently, we learned that Balatro experienced a surge in popularity on Steam and mobile following its multiple nominations at The Game Awards 2024. Now, it has been confirmed that the other Game of the Year nominees have also seen a sales boost in recent days.
This trend is not entirely surprising, as the gaming community often wants to familiarize themselves with potential GOTY winners before Geoff Keighley’s event, scheduled for December 12. However, what’s notable is that some games have seen their sales increase by as much as 268% in certain regions.
GOTY nominees at The Game Awards 2024 see a surge in sales
Alongside Balatro, ASTRO BOT, Black Myth: Wukong, ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio are competing for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. All had successful launches, strong community approval, and positive reviews.
According to Christopher Dring from Games Industry, the GOTY nomination helped most of these titles achieve significant sales increases in recent days, at least in Europe.
The most notable case is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix’s popular title, which saw a 268% week-on-week sales increase. Next is ATLUS’s RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio, with a 172% boost. Meanwhile, ASTRO BOT benefited from a 51% increase in sales. Lastly, ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree saw a 38% rise.
Dring did not provide data for Black Myth: Wukong since it is currently only available in digital format, but he revealed that Silent Hill 2 Remake saw a 43% sales increase despite not being nominated for Game of the Year. He clarified, however, that these figures don’t necessarily represent massive sales numbers but do indicate heightened interest in these games.
"We’re not talking huge sales figures overall, but a definite uptick."
Who will win GOTY at The Game Awards 2024?
For now, nothing is set in stone, and any nominated title could win Game of the Year, as they’re all excellent contenders. However, we can look at Metacritic scores to speculate on the winner. Based solely on reviews and ratings, ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and ASTRO BOT are the most likely contenders, as they are tied with a score of 94.
