Companies have gone to great lengths to allow players to personalize their gaming experience. In 2008, Xbox introduced avatars, characters that users created to represent themselves and reflect their identity while playing.
The end of an era is near, as Microsoft confirmed that the avatar editor is coming to an end and will shut down in early 2025. Additionally, it was confirmed that players will receive refunds for items related to this feature. It’s important to note that avatars won’t disappear entirely, as they will still be available on older Xbox consoles and remain compatible with some games, at least until further notice.
When will the Xbox avatar editor disappear?
In a statement, Microsoft announced that the avatar editing app will stop working early next year. Specifically, it will shut down on January 9, 2025. After that day, all avatars created with the app will disappear along with any related items.
Over the years, Xbox offered various paid items to give avatars more style. As a result, reimbursements will be made to all players who invested in these collectibles. Users who purchased items since January 1, 2023, will get their money back.
"All Xbox Avatar purchases from November 1, 2023, through January 9, 2025, will be refunded to your valid payment instrument after the Xbox Avatar Editor app is no longer available."
However, it’s important to clarify that avatars won’t disappear entirely. We know that the Xbox Original Avatars app will remain active even after January 9. Therefore, the original avatars from 2008 will still be available on Xbox 360 and can continue to be used in several games.
Why will modern Xbox avatars disappear?
In their statement, Microsoft made it clear that the latest avatar customization app received very poor reception. The company explained that it will shut down the app due to “low participation in the program.” As a result, the Xbox team will have the time and development resources to focus on other player experiences.
Additionally, they stated that despite this decision, they remain committed to improving the user experience on the platform and continue to explore other personalization alternatives. What do you think of this news? Will you miss the avatars and their customization options?
