The PlayStation 5 Pro launched to deliver better resolutions, frame rates, and overall performance. However, some users have expressed disappointment, claiming that certain optimized titles look worse than on the base model of the console.
Specifically, issues have been reported with Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, two popular games that received multiple enhancements to leverage the additional power of the PlayStation 5 Pro.
In response to player complaints, experts conducted analyses and shared their opinions on the matter. They concluded that the issue seems to stem from the use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an upscaling technology that is one of the hardware's key innovations.
Does Silent Hill 2 look worse on PlayStation 5 Pro?
The PlayStation 5 Pro debuted with over 50 enhanced titles identified by the PS5 Pro Enhanced label. However, some players are dissatisfied with the results, believing that certain games show minimal improvement or even degrade compared to their performance on the standard PS5.
Fans of the Silent Hill 2 remake were among the first to complain, noting that the title performs worse despite being supposedly optimized. On Reddit, users reported that the Quality mode still runs at 30 FPS, contrary to expectations of higher frame rates.
The real issue lies in Performance mode, where some objects—such as trees and puddles—appear noticeably different due to an unusual glow. Unsurprisingly, this sparked frustration and disappointment among players.
“I wanted to play my NG+ runs on PS5 Pro. I beat it the first time on standard PS5. But tonight I’m just kinda sad lol. Quality mode is still 30fps. Performance mode is 60 fps, but THIS time, all reflections are broken. It looks like the fuzzy wall texture effects from SH3 on PS2. This game is advertised as PS5 Pro Enhanced on the store. You cannot just advertise something that is false.”
Soon, the community realized that Silent Hill 2 wasn’t the only enhanced game suffering from a similar problem. Digital Foundry conducted an analysis and found similar issues with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor struggles on PS5 Pro; experts weigh in
Digital Foundry revealed that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor faces serious image quality issues when running on the PlayStation 5 Pro. A comparison showed that the optimized version has a strange glow absent in the standard PS5 version.
“f you look at this side-by-side, you can see just how unstable the game appears now with PSSR in the Performance mode. I would personally go as far as to say it looks dramatically worse than the old Performance mode here.”
According to experts, these issues are likely caused by PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. The problem arises when the rendered image has low detail or a complex model, making it challenging for the upscaling technology to handle effectively.

Will Sony and the studios fix the PS5 Pro issues?
At the time of writing, neither Sony nor the studios behind the mentioned games have addressed the problem. It remains unclear whether a definitive solution will be provided. Experts believe an update could resolve the issue.
If the error is indeed tied to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, other games might also experience similar issues. That said, Sony will likely take steps to prevent such problems in future releases.
