Jason Blum Praises Scott Cawthon’s Creative Process

While there’s no denying that the Five Nights at Freddy's movie was a tremendous success, it’s also true that bringing it to life was incredibly challenging. Fortunately, such difficulties won’t affect the sequel, and Jason Blum has just shared one of the reasons why.

A few months after the release of Five Nights at Freddy's, Blumhouse Productions confirmed that a second movie was in development. Surprisingly, it already has a release date and has even started filming.

Why Did the Five Nights at Freddy's Movie Take So Long?

The Five Nights at Freddy's movie was first announced in 2015, meaning it spent nearly a decade in development. The process was far from smooth, and at times it seemed like the project had been canceled.

The delay was due to many reasons, one being franchise creator Scott Cawthon’s determination to create the adaptation he envisioned. For example, he proposed 10 different drafts for the script, as he mentioned in a past Q&A. Naturally, deciding on a final version complicated the creative process, but things will be a bit easier for the sequel.

How Many Drafts Does the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Script Have?

In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions, shared that the script for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was selected from just 4 or 5 drafts prepared by Scott Cawthon.

In the same interview, the filmmaker mentioned that up to 14 drafts were considered for the first film, aligning with what Cawthon has previously shared.

Blum also highlighted the experience of working with Cawthon, noting that he was often one or two steps ahead whenever asked about the project.

"I’ve said it before, Scott is one of the smartest people I’ve worked with, if not the smartest," said Blum. "The way he made a movie without having done one before was extraordinary to me."
