When a game doesn’t convince us, we have two choices: abandon it immediately or push through to the credits to justify our investment. However, some players keep playing, even for hundreds of hours, despite their disappointment.

An example of this is Herp McDerperson, a Steam user who drew attention across the community with a review he posted on Valve’s platform. In it, he makes it clear that he was not satisfied with the game he played—but intriguingly, he spent thousands of hours on it.

Specifically, he logged over 9000 hours on Battlezone 98 Redux. All to conclude that he does not recommend it due to various issues he encountered over his lengthy playtime.

Herp McDerperson, whose real name is Scott Smith, shared that he received the original Battlezone as a Christmas gift in 1999. He was captivated by its mechanics and universe, so years later, he decided to try the remastered version, Battlezone 98 Redux. However, he was thoroughly disappointed.

For this reason, he posted his review on Steam to warn the community about changes he disliked. Originally, he published it on August 30, 2021, after dedicating 8461 hours to the game. Since then, Smith has continued to express his dissatisfaction with the new version.

“When I heard that this game was being developed, I immediately feared what would happen to my beloved game... my fears were well-founded.”

To everyone’s surprise, he didn’t stop playing at that point and instead spent an additional 600+ hours examining it further. He then updated his review on February 22, 2023, to reaffirm his discontent with the game, advising others not to try it.

“When I heard that this game was being developed, I immediately feared what would happen to my beloved game... my fears were well-founded,” the player wrote before listing things he disliked.

Smith believes the improved graphics ruined the game, as the ship destruction sequences aren’t as spectacular. Additionally, he claims there are numerous mission glitches, changes to the minimap system, and more. However, he clarifies that his review reflects the 1.5 version and that things may have changed since then.
