WhatsApp is one of the most important instant messaging apps in the world. As such, it strives to stay ahead with multiple updates that add new features and modify existing ones. In line with this, it is now preparing to implement a change that will forever transform how contacts are managed.
Until now, Meta’s app has depended on the phone’s SIM memory to sync and manage the contact list, which presents various limitations and issues. For example, it is very common to lose this information if we misplace our mobile device without having previously made a backup of our chats.
Fortunately, WhatsApp will introduce a substantial change that will offer more options for managing the contact list on both mobile and PC.

WhatsApp will allow storing contacts directly in the mobile app and on PC
In a post on its official blog, Meta announced a new upcoming change to WhatsApp. While the release date for Mexico and other regions is unknown, the post explained that this feature will finally allow users to store and manage contacts directly within the messaging app.
The company also explained that users will be able to add contacts from any device, not just the primary phone. In fact, it will be possible to add new contacts and manage them via PC with WhatsApp Web, the Windows app, and eventually “other linked devices.”
In essence, this means there will no longer be a need to assign a phone number to the Google account linked to the mobile device or save it in the mobile contact list. If we lose our phone or purchase a new one, we will be able to recover contacts and sync them from WhatsApp’s cloud storage.
Contacts saved directly within the app will use a new storage technology called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS), designed to protect privacy by keeping names and phone numbers encrypted.
Undoubtedly, this feature is particularly useful for users who share their phones with others or for those looking to separate personal and professional contacts when managing more than one WhatsApp account on a single device.
Finally, Jessica Maskell, a WhatsApp press representative, announced that the company also plans to implement a new username system, where phone numbers won’t be required, adding another layer of privacy and flexibility when saving and managing contacts in the app.
