While we are in a golden age of video game adaptations to film and TV, that doesn’t mean projects are free of challenges. A couple of years ago, a live-action God of War series was announced, confirming Sony and PlayStation’s interest, then led by Jim Ryan, in expanding their IPs beyond video games. However, the initial excitement has turned into uncertainty as the project has been restarted.

Sony and Amazon restart the God of War series; its producers are out of the project

According to a report from film and TV outlet Deadline, the live-action God of War series will start from scratch after showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, left the project. The report indicates that the creatives presented several scripts for the first season to Sony and Amazon, but none were convincing enough, leading the companies to restart the series as though it had never been announced.

The report notes that while the work of Rafe Judkins and the producers was praised by both companies, it did not align with the creative vision for the series, which will explore part of Kratos' story in Norse mythology, meaning Atreus will also be part of the concept.

Additionally, Sony and Amazon have decided to search for new writers, likely based on the existing concept, to continue with the production, which remains important to Prime Video.

While the God of War series is still in development, rumors suggest the franchise could return with a remastered collection of games set during Kratos' adventures in Greek lands and his revenge against the gods of Olympus, though nothing has been confirmed. On another note, God of War Ragnarök finally arrived on PC, and despite initial criticism for optimization issues, it now features updates to fully utilize the power of the platform.
