Before its launch, Halo Infinite was shaping up to be a major release for both Xbox and the franchise itself, as the expectation was to celebrate 20 years of the brand, the IP, and for 343 Industries to finally make a big leap. None of that happened, and although there were plans to straighten the course of this troubled title, many were canceled, including a Battle Royale mode that, according to one developer, could have changed everything for the better.

Dev claims Certain Affinity’s Battle Royale would have changed Halo Infinite for the better

According to a report from Pure Xbox, Mike Clopper, design director at Raven Software who, a few years ago, worked on the Battle Royale mode for Halo Infinite as part of the Certain Affinity studio, revealed that this mode could have changed the game’s reality. As part of a series of details shared about his professional journey on LinkedIn, he mentioned: "I led a large team of designers working on a canceled Battle Royale mode for Halo Infinite. I believe this product could have changed the game for the franchise. We loved playing it, and working on it was a fantastic experience despite its cancellation."

Currently, Halo Infinite continues to receive support and new content for its multiplayer mode; however, no major releases are expected during its cycle. Despite this, the future of the Xbox franchise looks promising as 343 Industries is no more—it is now called Halo Studios—and they revealed that they are working on new projects. Additionally, the next titles will be developed in Epic Games' Unreal Engine.

Previous reports indicated that Xbox’s goal for 2026 is to not miss the 25th anniversary of the brand and Halo, and this time to do things right and celebrate in a big way, hence the new approach for the franchise and the goal of pleasing all types of players who come to it.

Although there’s excitement, it’s not the same everywhere, and a former 343i developer warned colleagues that the Halo crisis will continue, as he believes there is no reason to think radical and positive changes will happen, meaning the troubled development and release processes will persist.
