Alan Hartman to retire, leaving his important role to Craig Duncan

Structural changes at Xbox continue. The company confirmed this morning that Alan Hartman, the current head of Xbox Game Studios, will retire at the end of this year. In 2023, the former corporate vice president of Turn 10 took over the position from Matt Booty, who is now president of content for Microsoft Gaming.

Hartman has decided to retire, meaning he will step down from his role at Xbox Game Studios at the end of November, following a 30-year career at Microsoft. Booty announced the news via a statement, confirming that Craig Duncan, a veteran from Rare, will now be the head of Xbox Game Studios.

Microsoft and Xbox have decided to promote Craig Duncan, a highly experienced developer and current head of Rare. He will take on the crucial role of overseeing Xbox Game Studios and ensuring that everything runs smoothly with the brand's various teams. Duncan will leave his position at Rare, where Joe Neate and Jim Horth will step in as the new co-directors.

Booty explained that they considered several candidates for the Xbox Game Studios leadership role. After thorough consideration, they chose Duncan due to his vast leadership experience and the work he accomplished at Rare.

“I’m pleased to announce that Craig Duncan will take on the role of head of Xbox Game Studios. Craig brings a wealth of experience from Codemasters, Midway Games, and Sumo Digital before joining Xbox in 2011 to lead Rare. During his time there, Rare has seen sustained commercial success and developed new IPs, notably Sea of Thieves, a continually evolving multiplatform franchise with over 40 million players.

“In his new role, Craig will continue focusing on helping our studios deliver unique, high-quality gaming experiences that can become successful franchises and reach more players by investing in new IPs,” stated Booty.

Craig will report to Booty and work alongside Hartman to ensure a smooth transition. With this change, it is hoped that Xbox will finally resolve the management issues that have plagued its teams and games for years.
