The animation and entertainment industries are in mourning. This morning, the passing of Nobuyo Oyama, a voice actress who marked the childhood of many anime fans, was confirmed. For decades, she gave life to Doraemon, the character who stars in the homonymous franchise alongside Nobita.

The actress passed away on September 29 at the age of 90, but the agency she worked with revealed the information just now. It is known that she passed due to age-related issues and possibly complications from the dementia she had suffered since 2015.

Fans of Doraemon and anime in general paid tribute to Oyama on social media. They highlighted her contributions to the industry and recognized her as one of the best actresses to have voiced the beloved cosmic cat.

Nobuyo Oyama was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1933 and remained active in the voice acting industry until 2015, the year she retired after being diagnosed with dementia. She was the third voice actress to portray Doraemon in the anime and other franchise productions.

Oyama voiced the cosmic cat from 1979 to 2005. It is estimated that her voice is part of 1787 episodes and 30 specials in the saga. Her agency revealed that the actress had a private funeral attended only by family members.

She shared the role of Doraemon with Kōsei Tomita, the original actress for the character, as well as with Masako Nozawa and Wasabi Mizuta, who continues in the role today. Fans thanked Oyama for her work in the franchise and remembered her fondly. Additionally, actors like Kazuhiko Inoue, who portrayed Kakashi from Naruto, also posted messages of gratitude.

“When I think of Doraemon, Nobuyo Oyama’s voice echoes in my mind (…) Doraemon, I’ve loved you since I can remember, thanks to Nobuyo Oyama,” wrote a fan on social media.

“Miss Nobuyo Oyama… She was someone who supported me since the beginning of my career. Thank you so much for all your hard work over the years. I truly appreciate it,” said Kazuhiko Inoue.
