Overwatch took the world by storm in 2016, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable franchises in the industry. Its 2022 sequel faced more challenges resonating with audiences, due to issues surrounding its very existence. However, the intellectual property remains strong, and it appears that it may be expanding to a new market.

According to one of the most trusted sources in the video game industry, Blizzard Entertainment's popular free-to-play title could be headed to mobile devices. While many questions remain unanswered, this hint was enough to excite fans eager to play as Tracer, Kiriko, Soldier 76, Lucio, and more on their smartphones and tablets.

Overwatch to Get a Mobile Version, Says Jason Schreier

On October 8, renowned journalist Jason Schreier of Bloomberg released his latest book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. In it, he interviews over 300 developers from the studio and reveals new details about canceled projects, future plans, and more.

In one section, Schreier notes that the company had been working on a mobile version of Overwatch. However, he did not provide additional details, so it is unclear whether this will be a direct adaptation of the original console and PC ports or a version with unique features tailored for mobile.

Additionally, Schreier did not elaborate on the current status of the project. It remains a mystery whether this rumored mobile version of the multiplayer hero shooter will debut soon or is still in development. Blizzard Entertainment has a long history of projects that never saw the light of day.

"Overwatch was led by [General Manager] Walter Kong, who oversaw the release of regular heroes and content for Overwatch 2, as well as new projects like a mobile version of the franchise," reads an excerpt from Schreier’s latest book.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time hints have emerged suggesting that the competitive video game would be available on iOS or Android. Back in 2021, a job listing suggested that Blizzard was working on a mobile version of the series.

In his book, Schreier also revealed that an Overwatch series was in production at Netflix, but the project was reportedly canceled alongside other Blizzard adaptations due to a legal dispute with the streaming giant.

But tell us, do you think the free-to-play title could succeed on mobile? Would you be willing to play this version? Let us know in the comments.
