The Japanese company is preparing the return of Shinobi in a big way, in collaboration with Universal Pictures.

SEGA announced plans to revive forgotten franchises, and in recent months, we've seen they were serious about it. Today, they confirmed once again that one of these franchises will have a big-screen adaptation that is now set to become a reality.

The Japanese company isn't just making a splash in the film industry with Sonic the Hedgehog productions; they're also aiming to captivate modern audiences with forgotten franchises. This time, however, it's not with Paramount Pictures but with Universal Pictures.

We’re talking about Shinobi, an arcade hack 'n' slash game series that originally debuted in arcades in 1987 and saw multiple releases until 2011, after which SEGA stopped releasing new titles.

Despite nearly 15 years of inactivity, today SEGA and Universal Pictures announced they will collaborate to bring a Shinobi movie to life.

The director will be Sam Hargrave, best known for his work on the multimedia franchise Extraction. Meanwhile, Ken Kobayashi (Sunny, Move On) will handle the script adaptation (via Gematsu).

The Shinobi movie was announced nearly 10 years ago

Interestingly, it was back in 2016 when SEGA first revealed plans for a Shinobi movie, though it’s unclear what happened with the project. The producer remains the same: Marc Platt. Apparently, SEGA never canceled the project and has now decided to push forward, capitalizing on the revival of its old IPs.

Unfortunately, fans will need to be patient, as no additional details were provided—no filming dates, release windows, casting, or other info—other than that Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce through Marc Platt Productions, alongside Dmitri M. Johnson (Story Kitchen) and Toru Nakahara (SEGA). Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson will handle executive production.

SEGA announced a new Shinobi game in late 2023, which is part of the Japanese company's strategy to revive franchises from its golden age that had fallen into obscurity.

The partnership with Universal Pictures shouldn't come as a surprise, as the company has shown significant interest in video game adaptations in recent years, with hits like Super Mario Bros. The Movie and Five Nights at Freddy's.

We remind you that just a few weeks ago, SEGA also announced that Eternal Champions will get a film adaptation, which will be brought to life by Skydance Media.

In case you missed it: here's a preview of the new Shinobi game.
