Xbox began the current generation in 2020 with a vision for a gaming ecosystem, major acquisitions, and ambitious plans. However, the major impact fans and the industry anticipated hasn't happened. Today, Xbox Series X|S sales have stalled, games once thought to be exclusives are coming to PlayStation and Nintendo, and Xbox Game Pass, along with cloud gaming through Xbox Cloud, have not achieved mass success. According to a reliable source, this is because Xbox is a disaster internally.

In a recent episode of the Spawn Wave podcast, renowned Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier discussed Xbox's situation just weeks before the current generation reaches its four-year milestone. Over this period, Xbox's plans have shifted repeatedly. Schreier points out that there is no clear direction, and what is said today may change tomorrow, as evidenced by their ever-shifting decisions on exclusivity: "Xbox is a disaster right now; their plan changes every year. Now, they keep hinting at portable devices, but who knows? A year ago, they said Indiana Jones would never come to PlayStation, so they change their minds every month. They are a disaster inside, and it's very sad."

Recently, details emerged about a tense relationship between Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond. Recall that Phil Spencer transitioned from head of Xbox to CEO of Microsoft Gaming, while Sarah Bond was promoted to president of Xbox. Reports indicate that communication issues existed between the two, with no alignment on key decisions, prompting them to seek professional and executive-level support from Microsoft to resolve their differences.

In recent years, Xbox has made changes to Xbox Game Pass that were not well-received by users, who feel there are widening gaps between the basic and Ultimate tiers. Additionally, the decisions to release Xbox Game Studios games on Sony and Nintendo platforms sparked backlash from fans. The revelation that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would indeed be released on PS5 angered the community. On top of this, the lack of standout AAA releases and some third-party launches failing due to technical or market issues has become a constant complaint among Xbox users.
