PlayStation 5 users were recently infuriated as the interface of their console was flooded with annoying ads that they couldn’t disable or remove. For a moment, it was believed that Sony had a new plan to implement advertising in such an invasive way, which, of course, angered fans.

Fortunately, this wasn’t the case, as the wave of commercials in the console's interface was caused by an annoying bug. The recent update caused the artwork of games that normally appeared in the background to disappear. In its place, promotional material—sometimes even outdated—started to appear.

Sony and PlayStation heard the complaints from players and fixed the issue within hours. As a result, the PlayStation 5 interface should now look as it always has, and players should be able to disable any unwanted ads.

Upon seeing the effects of the latest PlayStation 5 update, players quickly raised their voices and posted multiple complaints on social media. That’s when Daniel Hiatt, PlayStation’s product director, shared a message to calm the community. He confirmed that the ads were shown due to a bug that would be resolved shortly.

A few hours later, the official PlayStation support account on X confirmed that everything was fixed and that no more ads would appear in the news section of the new Welcome Hub.

In case you didn’t know, users saw ads related to various games, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in the background or other elements of the console interface.

As expected, no one wants their gaming experience interrupted by unwanted ads, so the community protested. Players are seeking to ensure that this type of initiative doesn’t become a reality or a regular occurrence in the industry.

On several occasions, Xbox players have protested for similar reasons, as Microsoft often displays ads for upcoming releases and other promotions on their consoles. While it’s not ruled out that Sony might do this at some point, PlayStation players have made it clear that they won’t tolerate it.
