Despite having only 2 installments under its belt, Horizon has established itself as one of the most important IPs of PlayStation and Sony. In fact, 2 projects from the franchise will debut in 2024, but fans are wondering what will come next. While waiting for more information, one of the most reliable sources in the industry shed some light on the situation.
During the State of Play in September, the existence of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was revealed, a new version of the 2017 title that will debut on October 31. Additionally, LEGO Horizon Adventures, a spin-off that will narrate the events of the first game in a fun and light-hearted tone, will hit stores on November 14.
Beyond these productions, we already know that Guerrilla Games has other projects from the saga in the works; however, which one will be the first to debut?
Horizon 3 is far off, and the multiplayer game is the next project from Guerrilla Games
After many rumors, the developer studio confirmed in 2022 that it is working on a multiplayer project based on the open-world franchise. Details are scarce, but we already know that it will feature an original cast of characters and that, according to leaked art, it will have a more stylized style.
On the other hand, the company confirmed in April 2023 that a main entry in the franchise is in development, and everything seems to indicate that it will be a continuation of Aloy's adventures. However, it appears that the release is still far off.
During his participation in the Spawncast podcast, Jason Schreier, a prestigious journalist from Bloomberg and one of the most reliable sources in the video game industry, pointed out that the online title of Horizon is the next big project from Guerrilla Games, not the third installment as many expect.
“Horizon Online is their next project, not the third single-player game, so it might still be a while. The games as a service initiative from PlayStation and Sony was no joke. Everyone thought there were games as a service everywhere, and Horizon is one of the few that hasn’t been canceled or failed like Concord did (...) A lot of people are working on that online project,” the journalist highlighted.
Jason Schreier acknowledges that many people are not interested in the multiplayer spin-off of the franchise and questions whether its future might be at risk if the remaster of the first game and the LEGO title fail in sales.
“Guerrilla Games is in an interesting situation because they are working on Horizon Online, and I’m not sure how many people will want it. That’s why they have this remaster coming and then the LEGO title. A part of me wonders what will happen if neither of the two succeeds and it turns out there’s not much interest in Horizon. Will they still make the online game? I don’t know. There are many questions about their strategy and that online game,” he said.
