Five Nights at Freddy’s has established itself as one of the icons of modern horror thanks to its video games and novels featuring terrifying animatronics and a story full of mystery. Thus, it was only a matter of time before it made the leap to film. Its first movie was a box office hit, and it seems the producers are already thinking about the future of the franchise.

The film starring Elizabeth Lail and Josh Hutcherson had the best opening in the history of Blumhouse Productions and became the highest-grossing horror film of 2023, surpassing Scream VI and The Nun II. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before Universal Pictures greenlit the production of a sequel.

Details about the second installment remain a mystery, but we do know that filming will begin in October and that some original cast members will reprise their roles. Although it won’t premiere until late 2025 in Mexico and other countries, it seems the producers are already thinking about what comes next.

Five Nights at Freddy’s will have a third movie, according to rumors

This week, Jonny Blox, a journalist and content creator specialized in Five Nights at Freddy’s, commented that, supposedly, Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures have already begun working on the third movie in the franchise. The original information comes from the popular and controversial insider Daniel Richtman, also known as DanielRPK.

According to the rumor, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is still in a very early stage of development. If this information is accurate, it's likely that the creatives are already considering the overall story and the characters that will appear. It’s also possible they will begin minor tasks for the preproduction phase to expedite the process.

We emphasize that this is an unconfirmed report, so we will have to wait to see if Scott Cawthon’s franchise returns to theaters with a third movie. The future of the project will likely depend heavily on the commercial success of the second film, which will arrive next December.

That said, it’s not unreasonable to think that FNAF will have more than 2 movies. Before the release of the first film, director Emma Tammi mentioned that she would love to make at least a trilogy based on that universe. Furthermore, actor Matthew Lillard, who played William Afton, revealed that he signed a contract for 3 feature films. Lastly, another rumor indicated that the production company is interested in creating a cinematic universe.
