Aside from massive layoffs and other controversies, the video game industry is experiencing one of its best eras. We say this because in recent years, titles have debuted that captivated audiences and became instant classics. Just as in 2023, the competition for the coveted GOTY will be fierce in 2024. Now, a new contender has entered the scene.
We’re talking about Astro Bot, the first full installment in the franchise that started as technical demonstrations for PlayStation consoles and peripherals. Its official release will take place on September 6, but some members of the press have already provided their reviews and ratings.
Thus, the latest project from TeamASOBI has fared very well and is currently at the top on Metacritic.

Astro Bot becomes the highest-rated full game of 2024 on Metacritic
The new and ambitious PS5 exclusive boasts an impressive average rating of 94 on Metacritic. This score is based on 111 reviews, so it is likely to increase or decrease as more media and critics provide their analyses.
Thus, Astro Bot has become the highest-rated game of 2024 so far. This means it has surpassed the also exclusive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the metroidvania Animal Well, the indie title Balatro, and the controversial new version of The Last of Us: Part II.
However, it is important to clarify the information. The TeamASOBI platformer is the completely new game of 2024 with the highest rating on Metacritic at the time of writing; however, it is not the highest-rated release of the year. That honor goes to Shadow of the Erdtree, the expansion of the popular ELDEN RING which achieved a score of 95 on Metacritic.
In any case, it is likely that Astro Bot will be a strong candidate for GOTY at The Game Awards and other awards. It will be interesting to see if other titles debut in the coming months that manage to surpass it.
It remains to be seen if the PS5 platformer performs equally well commercially. However, its developers will release more content and updates to increase replayability.
