There’s good news for players who experienced the era of the first PlayStation. Sony's console had an excellent game catalog filled with gems that are still fondly remembered. One of them will soon return and arrive on modern systems thanks to a remaster.

We’re talking about Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, a platformer that gained considerable popularity due to its mechanics, world, and adorable protagonist. The game was developed by Argonaut Games, a studio that closed in 2004 after various financial issues.

The surprise is that the company will reopen this year to bring back its popular title to consoles and PC. That’s right, Argonaut Games will revive after several decades of absence along with the first installment of Croc.

In case you don’t remember, Jeremy Elliott San, founder and former CEO of Argonaut Games, stated in 2020 that he was interested in bringing Croc back. Later, in June 2023, he confirmed that an HD version of the first game was already in development.

After months of waiting, the creative revealed more details about the project today, surprising players. He announced the reopening of Argonaut Games, a studio that worked on titles like Starglider, Starglider 2, Star Fox, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, and Croc 2.

The studio closed two decades ago as it couldn’t overcome various financial difficulties it faced for months. Elliott and his team will return, and their first game will be a remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which will be released this year on unspecified consoles and PC.

The new version of the game will feature improved graphics and controls. It will also include the Crocipedia, a virtual museum with concept art, interviews, and more about the development of the original 1997 game.

The developers promised to preserve the classic essence of the game and mentioned they are working on other surprises to be revealed in the coming months. However, they did not give any hints about what other projects are in the works.

“I am thrilled to see the Argonaut name back after 20 years of absence. Argonaut has always been about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in games, and I’m excited to see how the relaunch of Argonaut Games builds on that legacy, starting with the remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos,” Elliott said.
