Grand Theft Auto project delayed "indefinitely," developers confirm

Fans were set to revisit a classic entry in Rockstar Games' saga like never before.

Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most anticipated video games in recent years, will finally arrive in 2025. Thanks to the hype that has built up around it in recent months, many fans forgot that another project from the franchise was in development. Well, it seems that this project is still far, far away from release.

For many, the best entry in Rockstar Games' saga is GTA: San Andreas, the acclaimed open-world game that follows the journey of Carl “CJ” Johnson and his Grove Street gang. It received near-perfect ratings upon its debut 10 years ago and currently boasts an excellent average score of 95 on Metacritic.

With that in mind, many fans were thrilled when Meta, previously known simply as Facebook, confirmed that the classic video game would return with a VR version for Oculus Quest 2. The project was announced in 2021, and at the time, it was said to have been in development for several years.

There is bad news for fans who were eagerly anticipating the virtual reality version of the 2004 classic.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR delayed indefinitely, its future in doubt

GTA: San Andreas VR was announced during Facebook Connect in October 2021, and only a logo was shared. No images of the game were shown, nor was there a release window, and the official statement merely said that this new version would allow players to “get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas.”

In the past 3 years, neither Meta nor Rockstar Games shared more information about the project. Naturally, fans lost patience and started asking about it, even in the comment sections of trailers for other Oculus VR games.

In a teaser for the virtual reality title Behemoth, a fan asked about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR. Surprisingly, the official Meta Quest VR account responded to that comment, revealing that the project had been put on indefinite hold. The company confirmed this information in a statement to IGN but refrained from elaborating further.

GTA: San Andreas is on indefinite hold as we focus on other projects. We hope to work with our friends at Rockstar Games in the future,” said the spokesperson.

Although the project seems to still be on the table, it’s clear that it is not a priority for either party involved. While Meta invests a large amount of resources in developing artificial intelligence for its apps and services, Rockstar Games is hard at work on GTA VI.

But tell us, were you one of the players looking forward to the VR version of the open-world game? Let us know in the comments.
