Before crossovers became popular, Capcom surprised the world in the 1990s with a series of collaborative video games that culminated in the emergence of Marvel vs. Capcom, a franchise that, as its name suggests, brings together characters from both companies. Now more than ever, the community is eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new installment, but is it possible? It seems there is hope.

In a surprise move, the Japanese company announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a special package that includes all the crossover video games between both companies that debuted for arcades. Naturally, this revelation excited the loyal fans of the franchise.

In an interview with the media outlet Dexerto, Shuhei Matsumoto, producer of Street Fighter 6 and the recent collection, spoke about the future of the collaborative series. There, he expressed his desire to make more games with Marvel and SNK.

“The development team at Capcom has big dreams. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs. Capcom game. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new SNK game based on Capcom. I don’t know. But if that were to happen, it would take some time and effort to create and release those kinds of titles,” commented the Japanese creative.

Shuhei Matsumoto reiterates that the company's short-term efforts are to relaunch classic video games. Additionally, he hints that if there is interest from the public, they could make more ambitious titles in the future.

“What we can at least do for now is show that these series exist. We love these games. We hope you do too, and maybe in the future, if people get familiar with these sagas, there might be opportunities to create bigger games,” highlighted the producer.

In the same interview, Shuhei Matsumoto was asked about the possibility of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, one of the most beloved and popular fighting titles of all time, receiving some sort of update or enhancement. Once again, he expressed his desire to do something with that and other games.

“There are many things the team wants to do, and we have a lot of affection for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Not only that, but also other previous fighting games that might not be backward compatible or that aren’t available on a current platform. There are many things we look forward to with anticipation and big dreams, but now it’s a matter of time and seeing what we can do step by step,” said the developer.

Finally, the Japanese producer commented that Marvel is well aware that there is a passionate community backing the competitive scene. It seems the future of the series largely depends on the reception of the upcoming collection, which will debut sometime this year.

“They agreed too. So, it’s like the stars have aligned. The timing was perfect and now we can make it happen. We are all very excited. And part of the inspiration for doing this was that Marvel noticed the community tournaments at places like EVO,” commented the Japanese developer.

Of course, at this moment it’s difficult to know if players will get to enjoy a new installment of this or another crossover saga. For now, the Japanese company is focused on relaunching classic video games so that new and veteran fans can enjoy them on modern consoles.

During EVO 2024, the return of SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, a title that brings together characters from both companies, was announced. It’s already available on Steam, though the console version will arrive shortly after.

But tell us, do you think there will be a new title in these franchises? Let us read you in the comments.
