Kratos has been accompanied by his son Atreus in his most recent adventures. It’s no secret that some fans of God of War have criticized this relatively new character in the franchise, as they are not entirely satisfied with his role in the narrative and gameplay of the saga.
To some surprise, David Jaffe, the creator of the PlayStation franchise, is another detractor of Atreus. In a recent interview, the creative lashed out against the character and stated that he will never fill the lead role of Kratos.
The creator of God of War doesn’t like Atreus
In his YouTube channel, David Jaffe recently talked with John Garvin, the director of Days Gone. At one point in their conversation, they discussed God of War and the character of Atreus. Jaffe made it clear that he does not like the character introduced by Santa Monica in the 2018 installment.
From his perspective, Atreus is a bad character in every sense and does not have what it takes to someday take on the role of Kratos. For this reason, he believes that God of War: Ragnarök failed to convince players that Atreus could be a good protagonist.
The creative acknowledged that he loved the idea of Kratos having a son; however, he thinks that Santa Monica stumbled by not creating a character that was “cool” and made players say “I want to be that guy”
“Atreus is a terrible character at a visual level and a play level,” Jaffe said during the conversation. He added that Kratos remains a much more interesting character than his son.
Atreus has gained increasing importance in the franchise’s narrative. Despite this, his character has sparked debates and controversy among passionate God of War fans, making him one of the most criticized aspects of the series in recent years.
