Recently, information about the return of the FIFA franchise to video games has been circulating, and it could happen with 2K Sports, responsible for the successful NBA 2K and WWE 2K series, which have a high reputation for quality and gameplay, despite controversies over their online modes and microtransactions. As time goes by, more details emerge, and the latest indicates it would be a fully licensed game.
FIFA 2K will feature more than 800 real teams, report says
According to a report by Xbox Era, the football video game specialist account "@FUTZONEFIFA" revealed new details about what we unofficially know as FIFA 2K25. According to the publication, this installment, the first of the emerging franchise, will be fully licensed, featuring more than 800 teams and more than 35 leagues, slightly more than what EA Sports FC currently offers, which lacks some teams and competitions due to official licensing issues or exclusivity agreements with Konami's eFootball.
In this case, FIFA would leverage its position as the highest governing body of football worldwide to provide 2K with the necessary licenses for the first video game to offer fans what they want. After all, an important part of the success of realistic sports games is allowing the user to achieve in the game the victories their team denies them in real life.
So far, rumors indicate that FIFA 2K will be presented soon, and its first installment will debut this year. Regarding this, the plan of the football federation and the video game company, owned by Take-Two, is to have the franchise positioned before the 2026 World Cup, which would result in the exclusivity of the tournament for this new IP. In contrast, EA Sports FC will feature the 2024 Eurocup this year, in addition to maintaining official club competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League, as well as the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores.
