Throughout its history, PlayStation has bet on portable consoles and has had resounding successes such as the PSP. The company recently launched the PlayStation Portal, a PS5 add-on that did not meet the expectations of all traditional handheld game lovers.
What's interesting is that recent rumors claim that PlayStation is working on a new console to take everywhere and be able to enjoy some of the most iconic games. According to one report, the system could run PlayStation 4 titles.
New Sony handheld would let you play PS4 titles
Journalist Anton Logvinov caught the attention of many gamers with a recent report shared on resetera (via Wccftech). In it he claims that Sony is working on a new PlayStation handheld console, which would allow PlayStation 4 games to be enjoyed.
It mentions that the device would be compatible with the company's games that are already currently available on PC and are compatible with Steam Deck. Thus, the system would have a limited catalog for now, if the report is accurate.
"I can confirm that Sony is preparing a new PSP for release, but damn - there are only PS4 games in the launch lineup, which are generally available on PC, and therefore on SteamDeck. Retail chains, by the way, are quite sceptical," stated the source.
It is important to note that this is a rumor, as Sony has given no hints that the project is in development. A few months ago, youtuber Moore's Law is Dead shared a similar report. He claimed that PlayStation and AMD are working on a handheld system that is in an early stage of development. The difference is that he said the console will be capable of running PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games.
He added that the system will feature a custom APU from AMD and will likely have 18 compute units to run past-generation console titles smoothly.
Sony succeeded with the PSP thanks to its technology, multimedia features and large catalog of games. On the other hand, the company failed miserably with the PS Vita due to a very limited library of its own games, the price of the system and some decisions it made regarding hardware functionalities.
