Helldivers 2: PlayStation reverses controversial decision after criticism and review bombing

The requirement to link PS Network and Steam accounts will not be mandatory

Sony and PlayStation made the Helldivers 2 community furious with a simple decision: to make PlayStation Network and Steam account linking mandatory to continue playing on PC. This resulted in a wave of criticism and negative reviews to the franchise's games.

Of course, the situation was not to the liking of Arrowhead Game Studios, who saw the popularity of their best game drop overnight due to a controversy. After all that happened, Sony and PlayStation decided to listen to gamers and reverse the decision. So account linking will no longer be necessary on Steam.

After controversy, Helldivers 2 will no longer require account linking

A few days ago, PlayStation announced that, starting May 6, new PC players would be required to link a PlayStation Network account to their Steam account in order to play Helldivers 2. Subsequently, on May 30, all players would be required to log in.

In addition, it was announced that as of June 4, everyone would have to have their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts linked in order to be able to play. As we told you, this provoked the anger of the community, which resulted in thousands of negative reviews and requests for refunds.

Even, the sequel was pulled from the market in countries where there is no support for PlayStation Network accounts. After seeing the whole mess, Sony decided to think about improving things and, in the end, reversed its controversial decision. Through a message on social networks, it announced that account linking will no longer be necessary or mandatory.

"Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

"We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans," stated the company.
