Garry’s Mod, also known simply as Gmod, is one of the most interesting sandbox propositions on the market, as it allows users to interact with the physics system of Valve's Source game engine. Over the years, it became somewhat of a holy grail for the modding community thanks to its versatility. Unfortunately, content inspired by Super Mario Bros. and other franchises from Nintendo has its days numbered.
If we take a look at the Steam Workshop, we'll discover a lot of material based on the mustachioed plumber's franchise: from character models to scenarios and levels. At the moment, there are 5453 addons for Super Mario Bros., a number that is much larger if we consider the rest of the content inspired by the other Japanese company sagas.
However, Nintendo has Garry’s Mod in its sights and has taken action to remove content from its intellectual properties from the platform. This was confirmed by Facepunch Studios, who finally broke the silence and spoke about this situation in an official statement.

Garry’s Mod will remove all content inspired by Nintendo franchises
In a post shared on the game's Steam page, the developers confirmed that, due to Nintendo's direct intervention, they had to remove certain items in recent weeks. Apparently, these removals have been happening for months.
"Some of you may have noticed recently that certain Nintendo-related items have been removed from the Workshop. This is not an error, as the removals came from Nintendo. Honestly, it's pretty fair. This is Nintendo's content, and what they allow or not depends on them. They don't want you to play with those things in Garry’s Mod... that's their decision, and we have to respect it," said Facepunch Studios.
The studio behind Gmod acknowledges that it is a long and ongoing process, as they will need to remove 20 years of content made by the community. With this in mind, they address the fans and request that they remove their projects and refrain from uploading them again to facilitate the task.
"It seems like Nintendo and their lawyers won again," said a fan in the comments section. "Although they have the right, I'm still against that unnecessary behavior. To be clear, Nintendo isn't friendly, they're just greedy and overprotective," another commented. "I never understood Nintendo's logic when it comes to copyright," assured a third.
It's unclear why the Japanese company recognized and targeted Garry’s Mod content inspired by its franchises until this moment. As Facepunch Studios mentions, mods of Super Mario Bros. and other intellectual properties have existed for almost 2 decades, so this sudden move caught the attention of the community.
