We already knew that the 2024 release calendar was going to be full of big launches. One of the most eye-catching games is Rise of the Ronin, the latest project from Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja. Despite having a strong commercial start, it seems to have fallen short.
The highly anticipated PlayStation 5 exclusive hit stores on March 22, 2024. Although it presents interesting ideas and an open world that successfully recreates 19th century Japan, it received mixed reviews from both press and players. Currently, it has an average score of 76 on Metacritic.
It appears that this lukewarm reception translated into commercial performance below expectations. Although the number of units sold is unknown, a recent report from Koei Tecmo suggests that the game, published by PlayStation, sold less than expected.

Did Rise of the Ronin Have Lower Than Expected Sales?
On April 15, Koei Tecmo, owner of Team Ninja, sent a brief document to investors reviewing its forecast for the current fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2025. Apparently, it did not reach its sales target by about $70 MMDD.
Specifically, the Japanese company reduced its sales forecast by 11.6% and its operating income by 28%. According to the document, this revision comes after some recent releases had commercial performance lower than initially expected, although Rise of the Ronin is not explicitly mentioned.
Other releases include Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's Complete Edition, which debuted on February 6, and Fate/Samurai Remnant, which hit stores in September last year.
The number of sales Rise of the Ronin has achieved since its late last month release is unknown; however, it had a strong start in Japanese lands, where it placed in the top, right behind Capcom's Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Nintendo's Princess Peach: Showtime!.
We'll have to wait for Koei Tecmo to publish its financial report to learn more details about the commercial performance of the ambitious PlayStation 5 exclusive.
