Bungie Adrift: Marathon, their next game, changes directors

The Destiny company has been singled out in a negative light by Sony executives

Bungie continues to struggle, and the recent debacle of Destiny 2 exposed the problems the company is facing, which seem to have lost their direction. It was recently reported that their next game, a new installment in their Marathon IP, would be delayed until 2025, and today the reason behind that decision was revealed.

Marathon, Bungie's Next Game, Secretly Changed Directors

Through a post on their X account, Joe Ziegler, formerly the director of VALORANT, announced that he became the creative director of Marathon 9 months ago, Bungie's upcoming release (via Insider-Gaming). This means that Christopher Barrett quietly left that position, as until a few days ago, it was believed that he was still in charge of the project. Now it's confirmed that the company made this change secretly, and it was only made public amidst a wave of rumors about internal issues.

Despite the controversial decision and the uncertainty surrounding the development process of Marathon, Joe Ziegler assures that the project is exciting, and they will share news when there are significant developments.

In recent months, Bungie has been negatively spotlighted due to the financial decline of Destiny 2, reports of an internal dispute between the company's leadership and PlayStation Studios' leadership, who seeks to take control of all its operations. Additionally, Sony's president, Hiroki Totoki, stated that Bungie needs to pay attention to its development processes and budget management, fueling the idea that the Japanese company is not satisfied with the acquisition and the results delivered despite it being one of the highlighted moves during Jim Ryan's era.
