Ready Player Two: Steven Spielberg confirms the movie is in development

The filmmaker also revealed his role in the film as he directed the first installment

The film adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One was a success in 2018, and since then, there have been expectations for a sequel. However, before that could happen, the author needed to write the second book. In 2020, Cline released Ready Player Two, and now it's time for its arrival on the big screen, as confirmed by Steven Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg confirms Ready Player Two is in development

During an interview with Showbiz 411, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg revealed that the movie adaptation of Ready Player Two is in development. This came in response to a question about the work projects he has for this year. Spielberg's statement was brief but enough to ignite excitement for the second part of this story inspired by virtual reality and the metaverse.

Furthermore, Steven Spielberg revealed that his role in Ready Player Two will be in production only, not in directing. This is surprising news as he directed the first film, but this time the directorial role will be in the hands of another filmmaker who has not been revealed.

What is Ready Player One and Ready Player Two

Ready Player One tells the story of Wade Watts, a gamer in 2045 who enjoys the OASIS metaverse created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow of Gregarious Games. It becomes the object of ambition when Halliday's death results in a contest to claim ownership of this virtual space and business, provided the Easter eggs he left behind are found. This film, like the novel, stood out for its use of pop culture elements from the 1980s.

The story of Ready Player Two takes place after the events of the first story, with Wade Watts as the owner of OASIS, but newly notified of a technology that Halliday developed but never released, ONI. It allows experiencing the metaverse with all five senses, with potential real-life implications and addictive qualities. This premise gives rise to a new story in this virtual space that will be adapted into a film.
