According to a report from Gamesindustry.biz, Kadokawa Corporation announced the acquisition of Acquire, the company responsible for the brilliant retro-style 2.5D JRPGs Octopath Traveler. The two installments of this series have received acclaim since their release on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation. Regarding this acquisition, Kadokawa Corporation stated, "To strengthen the ability to create intellectual property in games as part of our game business strategy, we have turned Acquire into a wholly-owned subsidiary. By acquiring the company, which has produced million-selling hit titles, we hope to generate synergies with our existing game-related subsidiaries, strengthen our planning and development capabilities throughout the group, and enhance our console game lineup."

Who is Acquire and what are their most important video games?

Acquire was founded in 1994, and its first game was the cult classic Tenchu: Stealth Assassins for the original PlayStation. Subsequently, the company ventured into other franchises such as Way of the Samurai and What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord?, always associated with Sony consoles like PS2, PS3, and PSP, along with some releases on PC.

In 2018, in collaboration with Square Enix, Acquire co-developed Octopath Traveler, one of the best JRPGs known for its compelling story, gameplay design rooted in the genre's fundamentals, and retro visual style with 2.5D elements. In 2023, they released Octopath Traveler II, the second installment that received excellent reviews, solidifying the Japanese company's reputation.
