After many years of absence, Final Fantasy XIV is finally on its way to Xbox. The open Beta of the MMO on Xbox Series X|S is coming soon, but the announcement came with news that disappointed many: it will be necessary to have Xbox Game Pass in order to play the final version of the title on the brand's ecosystem.

Square Enix confirmed that the Open Beta and trial version of Final Fantasy XIV for Xbox will not require an Xbox Game Pass subscription. However, things will be different with the full version of the MMO. The studio revealed that players will need an Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription[/b] in order to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox X|S Series.

To many, this makes all the sense in the world, as this is an online game. However, the news upset several Xbox users for one simple reason: PlayStation players do not need a PS Plus subscription to have adventures in Final Fantasy XIV. This policy applies to free-to-play games, but Square Enix's game is an exception.

For this reason, some people used social networks to criticize this decision by Square Enix and Xbox. Several players stated that they would rather continue playing on PC, while others asked the companies not to require a subscription to play.

“The Free Trial version, including the open beta test, will not require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play. However, the full Xbox Series X|S version will require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play,” stated Square Enix.
