As part of its expansion process to reach a larger audience with a better offering, Netflix ventured into the gaming sector, and one of its initial efforts was the inclusion of titles in its subscription service, which has recently experienced a significant boost with the addition of GTA games.
While Netflix subscribers have the option to enjoy a variety of games at no additional cost, the truth is that almost no one was doing it. However, this changed when Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition arrived on the service on December 14th.
GTA Takes Over Netflix Games
Apparently, Netflix capitalized on the excitement surrounding the Rockstar franchise after the GTA 6 trailer reveal in December by adding the titles to its service. Primarily because of them, Netflix Games surpassed 28 million monthly downloads, according to Appmagic figures (via mobilegamer.biz).
Out of that number, over 18 million downloads were thanks to GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Vice City, and GTA 3. This means that these three games accounted for more than half of the total downloads of the service, which consists of dozens of titles.
GTA: San Andreas would have been the most popular, achieving 11.6 million downloads on its own, with 9.1 million on Apple devices and 2.6 million on Android devices. These figures were enough to make it the most downloaded game in the history of the service, leaving Storyteller by Annapurna (9.4 million downloads) in second place.
Netflix Games Tripled Its Popularity Thanks to GTA
Perhaps the release of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy in the catalog was the push that the service needed for its users to start trying it out or perhaps discovering it.
For comparison, in November 2023, Netflix Games recorded 10 million downloads, and Netflix confirmed (without providing specific figures) that its effort to engage users with gaming content had substantially improved, with a 300% increase compared to the previous year.
In a letter to investors, the streaming company, while mentioning that its gaming efforts are still in the early stages and unrelated to its series or films, expressed satisfaction with the progress.
It also stated that it is the "most successful launch [of Netflix Games] in terms of installations and engagement."
Ironically, there were users who created a Netflix account "just to play these games."
