The reinvention of God of War in 2018 was acclaimed, and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, followed suit. The PlayStation franchise continues on the path of success among fans and critics, but not for its original creator, who dislikes the direction it has taken.

David Jaffe, the creative director of the first 2 games in the series, used his YouTube channel to criticize the direction SIE Santa Monica Studio has taken for the continuation of the God of War franchise after Ascension.

Why doesn't David Jaffe like the direction of the current God of War games?

The creative mentioned that he finds the same problem in God of War that he saw in Indiana Jones after Last Crusade: reflecting the developers' personal problems in the characters and transforming them along with them.

"I don't like the direction God of War is going in at all," Jaffe commented.

While he acknowledged that the creators grew alongside the franchise, and the passage of time itself made them express different ideas in the characters, he made it clear that he doesn't want the characters to grow too.

"I don't give a damn about what you and the studio are going through. And I don't say that disrespectfully," the creative clarified. "No, screw you."

Jaffe explained that PlayStation is known for using video games as an artistic medium while appealing to the masses, which is fine. Still, he commented that if they are going to do something different, do it, but with a different franchise or different characters, and "don't call it God of War".

"If you're going to create a new IP or put a character in the God of War universe, and that character is struggling with problems many of you have had, that's fine, do it all you want, but don't take Kratos [and do it with him]."

It's important to clarify that Jaffe loved both God of War Ragnarök and God of War (2018) in terms of gameplay and production, but not so much in terms of creative decisions.

Do you agree with David Jaffe? Do you think Kratos should retain the qualities that made the God of War franchise popular? Tell us in the comments.
