Console sales are now on the expected track after the challenges faced at launch, and as anticipated, PlayStation 5 leads in the most important markets. However, there are results that continue to be surprisingly unfavorable, indicating that the bubble that formed a few years ago has burst.
Console sales dropped during November 2023 in the United States
The analysis firm Circana through the renowned analyst Mat Piscatella, presented the report on video game and console sales in the United States during November 2023, an important month leading up to the holiday season. Initially, there is information to consider because hardware sales dropped by 24% compared to November 2022, and both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as Switch, recorded double-digit declines in their dollar sales, with the hybrid console experiencing the most significant decrease.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lead the North American market
Is this bad news? Not necessarily. What is happening is that after the brief boom generated during the pandemic and post-pandemic period, the video game industry is readjusting, and that period will be considered atypical. While the results were impressive, they do not correspond to what is typically observed under normal conditions.
That said, the console sales results for November 2023 favored PlayStation 5, which was the best-selling console of the month and led in both units and dollars. In second place was Xbox Series X|S, which has already solidified its position as second in such an important market as the USA, holding that position in both unit and dollar sales. Meanwhile, Switch continues its free fall, a situation expected as the console's commercial cycle is in decline.
