Bungie has been making headlines in recent months, and not for something positive. The studio faced a wave of layoffs that ultimately affected the development schedule for new content in Destiny 2. To make matters worse, Bungie has now angered the community, with players believing that a new microtransaction offer is more of a scam for new players.
This week marks the beginning of the Season of Wishes, and with it, the studio thought it was a good idea to launch a Starter Kit. On paper, the initiative is appreciated, as a little help for users trying to catch up on the content of a live-service game with years on the market is always welcome. However, the package generated a highly adverse reaction.
Fans of Destiny 2 believe Bungie played a prank on new players
The package in question would offer "3 of the best weapons in Destiny 2": Chosen of the Traveler, Dire Omen, and Dream Simulant, along with other 3 cosmetic accessories and 125,000 Bright Dust, 50 Enhancement Cores, 5 Enhancement Prisms, and 1 Ascendant Shard.
Bungie believed that this would be useful for new players, but veterans quickly pointed out the terrible offer the company was providing. The package was sold for $15 USD; that is, it is more expensive than a Season Pass.
"You can buy a Season [Pass] and get SO MUCH more for your money," stated one of the players who raised their voice and assured that the veteran friends of any player who buys this package will let them know they were scammed.
"I just don't know how this starter pack was approved," commented another fan. "For example, what part of taking money from new players was not going to end with an incredible negative reaction from the community?"
Bungie listened to the fans and removed the controversial microtransaction
Such was the discontent of veteran players that the complaints reached the ears of Bungie, which ultimately decided to back down and stop selling the package in question.
"We've been monitoring the conversation around what has been enjoyed and what hasn't. Starting with the Starter Kit, which isn't something that brings joy," acknowledged Bungie. "That's why we've removed it from the stores."
It is unknown whether the company will put this package back on sale, but at a lower price, or if it will hide it forever as if this incident had never happened.
