Brian Fargo discusses the role of artificial intelligence in videogame development

Microsoft and Xbox recently announced the integration of various artificial intelligence tools for the development of their games. The project has generated all kinds of comments due to what the use of AI in a creative industry such as video games implies.

Even a few days before the announcement, Brian Fargo, CEO of InXile Entertainment, spoke on the subject and doubted the use of AI for game development. His statements caught the attention of many, especially since it is a company that is part of Xbox Game Studios.

InXile doubts about the use of AI in game development

As you probably know, InXile Entertainment focuses on the development of RPG games, where aspects such as narrative are very important. From Fargo's perspective, he is not convinced about the use of AI to generate elements such as art or even scripts.

During a talk with the podcast The Fourth Curtain (via Wccftech), he stated that he is interested in the vision of the creators and not so much in the possibility of, for example, having much more complex non-playable characters (NPCs) that you can talk to for a long time.

He accepted that AI can have interesting applications and help with some tasks; however, for now he is not so convinced as to use it in future games.

"I'm not convinced yet (...) If I can talk to a random NPC forever, I personally don't care about that, that's not interesting to me. But for some people who want to live in that world like in Skyrim, I think that maybe is more interesting to them. I think it has to do somewhat with your objective with the game and where I want people spending their time. I think about it in that way: what am I having the player do?", stated the creative.

He added that at InXile Entertainment they have thought of some interesting possibilities to integrate the use of AI into their development cycles, which would make their RPGs likely to be deeper. However, he stressed that he is not convinced for now, as he needs to learn more about the possible applications of the technology.

It is important to reiterate that Fargo made these statements a few days before Microsoft and Xbox's announcement. So it is unclear whether InXile Entertainment will ultimately be encouraged to give AI a chance.
