The TV show referenced one of the year's most successful video games

Since its debut in the late 1990s, South Park has become one of the most popular animated satire series on television. Now, over 25 years later, it still makes headlines for its irreverent parodies of celebrities, controversies, and, of course, entertainment products. So, one of the top video games of 2023 made an appearance in the latest special episode.

A few days ago, the show created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone premiered a special episode titled Joining the Panderverse on Paramount+. The story showcases a new parallel universe that is inclusive with a highly diverse cast. Of course, it's a satire of the supposed forced inclusion.

South Park parodies Baldur’s Gate 3 in a new episode

In one scene, the alternative version of Cartman plays Baldur’s Gate 3, the successful RPG by Larian Studios. Immediately, he complains that he has played for about 50 hours and will have to start a new game, so he asks if there's cross-progression between universes. Stan then responds and says there isn't even cross-progression between PlayStation 5 and PC.

For those who may not know, cross-progression is a feature that allows players to transfer their progress and content from one platform to another. It's becoming more common, although there are still games where it's absent. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 is not one of them.

Indeed, Larian Studios, the development studio behind the successful role-playing video game, responded to the South Park sequence and emphasized that there is currently cross-progression between PlayStation 5 and PC, a feature that debuted shortly after the console version was released.

"Hello, South Park. While Baldur’s Gate 3 saved games can't cross multiversal boundaries, we can confirm that they do transfer between PS5 and PC," the company said in a post.

Of course, the TV show is no stranger to the world of video games. In addition to its parodies of World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, and more, it has some RPG games developed by Ubisoft under its belt. Currently, THQ and the studio Question are working on a new cooperative multiplayer game in the franchise.

But tell us, what do you think of this joke? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments.
