Marvel’s Spider-Man 2[ promises to be an open-world experience packed with Easter eggs. While the vast majority of references are expected to be related to the world of comics and the mythology of the arachnid superhero, there is also room for a fun and clever nod to a popular classic anime.

A few days ago, Insomniac Games surprised the community with a new and cool official trailer, which shows unseen scenes and confirms the return of an iconic comic book villain. However, fans immediately noticed a reference to an animated film: Akira from 1998.

Specifically, in the launch trailer, Mary "MJ" Jane is seen performing the iconic Akira Slide, which involves sliding a motorcycle sideways while the character looks at the camera. Although it's a playful nod, the community took the opportunity to mock the moment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a nod to the film Akira, and fans mock it, why?

Most of the time, characters replicating the Akira Slide succeed and manage to stop the motorcycle in a scene that looks epic and thrilling. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the story is different.

As seen in the trailer, Mary Jane is unable to execute the slide correctly, loses control, and falls off the vehicle. Although the context of the scene is unknown, users mocked this reference and pointed out that Mary Jane became the first fictional character to ruin the famous Akira Slide.

"That MJ ruins the Akira Slide must be in the top 5 craziest mistakes of all time," wrote a fan. "She really tried to do the slide and failed. I've never seen a character mess it up before," wrote another.

Of course, others pointed out that seeing a version of the Akira Slide that fails is refreshing and a clever way to reference the acclaimed film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. Of course, some also argue that it is very difficult, almost impossible, to replicate that move in a realistic setting.

Either way, the Marvel’s Spider-Man and Akira communities reacted with humor to this fun Easter egg that combines the worlds of comics and anime.
