Rocket League has been on the market for almost 10 years, and since its debut, Psyonix has improved it with various additions that keep it very active as a live service game. The bad news for its community is that it will eliminate a very popular feature that, for many, has become a fundamental element of the experience.

We are referring to item trading between players. This option was enabled 1 year after the original launch and allowed players to offer items they obtained in one way or another while simultaneously receiving one they desired and didn't have—something that fostered collecting within the community and had so much significance for many users that they even played to improve their Garage.

Why is Rocket League eliminating player-to-player trading?

Psyonix announced that it will eliminate player-to-player trading starting from December 5 at 5:00 PM (Mexico City time).

According to the studio now owned by Epic Games, this measure will be implemented to "align with Epic Games' general terms regarding game cosmetics and item store policies." In other words, Psyonix wants Rocket League to be similar to other Epic Games titles (such as Fall Guys and Fortnite), where trading, transferring, or selling cosmetic items is not possible.

An interesting note is that with this change, Psyonix left open the possibility that in the future there might be "plans for Rocket League vehicles to reach other Epic Games over time," giving players ownership of these franchises regardless of the games or platforms (cross-play).

Rocket League's Change Devastated Its Community

This announcement took Rocket League players by surprise, as evident from the Reddit post.

Users were complaining about the lack of new content, which was what they were asking for from the studio, but instead of updates, they received this change as a cold shower.

The community quickly expressed its disappointment, displeasure, and dissatisfaction, among other negative feelings towards Psyonix, emphasizing the importance that this element had gained over time to the point of becoming one of the pillars of the title, according to them, especially for collectors who will no longer be able to obtain items that were lost for some reason and that others were willing to trade.

Will I lose the items I received through trading in Rocket League?

It's important to mention that this change will only prohibit player-to-player trading; the trading system for Core Items, Tournament Items, and Blueprints will still be available, allowing players to continue exchanging their duplicate items without issues and receiving a rarer item in return.

If you obtained any items through trading in the past, you don't have to worry about them disappearing, as they will not be removed from your inventory after the change. Psyonix made it clear, however, that it does not support item lending, so if you have any items borrowed, you should ask the user you lent them to return them before it becomes impossible. Psyonix will not be able to reverse any trades after the agreed-upon date.
