Cyberpunk 2077: Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty Mark the End of the Project

CDPR has confirmed that the development cycle has concluded, and the future lies in other releases.

Cyberpunk 2077 will celebrate its 3rd anniversary this coming December, during which the project transitioned from disaster to quasi-redemption. The latter is stated because, despite various improvements and treatments, the game never quite reached the level of the concept that CD PROJEKT RED showcased in trailers and previews for years. Phantom Liberty has been well-received, and Update 2.0 as well, but they will be the last significant elements we see for this game.

Phantom Liberty Marks the Conclusion of Cyberpunk 2077

In an interview with PC Gamer, Gabe Amatangelo, the director of Cyberpunk 2077 in its final stages, confirmed that Update 2.0 and the expansion Phantom Liberty are the last major content additions coming to the troubled title. In the case of the former, it significantly improved the gaming experience, and for the latter, it introduced a story that captivated fans, especially due to the character portrayed by Idris Elba. However, there won't be anything of this sort in the future of Cyberpunk 2077.

According to the creative director, there will be some updates to address bugs and errors, but the era of updates that were announced with great fanfare to fix the game and provide the promised experience has come to an end.

Currently, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has been a success. It initially debuted with a higher rating than the base game and was far from the disaster of 2020. Simultaneously, the number of players who returned or decided to give CDPR's game another chance increased, surpassing current hits like Starfield.

On another note, it's known that most of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty team will move on to developing the new installment of The Witcher. Cyberpunk will continue to live, with plans for a second installment, but it's a distant project, so it will be years before we see a new title from this emerging IP.
