Sources say there will be layoffs in at least one of the company's studios

In a surprise move, SEGA announced the cancellation of several games, including HYENAS, a multiplayer FPS that was in development at Creative Assembly. The rest of the cancelled projects belonged to its European branch and were never officially announced.

On the other hand, several sources claim that the cancellations will result in layoffs, at least at Creative Assembly. All this is due to the low profitability of SEGA's European branch, so the company decided to make important structural changes.

Why did SEGA cancel HYENAS and other games?

By means of a statement, SEGA informed that it expects losses in its European branch for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. For such reason, it decided to go ahead and implement a restructuring in several of its areas.

The company cites the pandemic and inflation in Europe as some of the external factors that have impacted the performance of its branch. First it was decided to cancel several games in active development, among them is HYENAS and some unannounced titles.

On the other hand SEGA will also reduce its fixed costs in several of its companies, among them Creative Assembly. Sources claim that there will be layoffs from that studio, but SEGA has not confirmed this at this time.

HYENAS was revealed in the middle of last year and received heavy criticism for being a game-as-a-service. A few weeks ago, SEGA stated that the development of the title was challenging and that it was defining the business model it would have. However, the project is now a thing of the past.
