For many years, the question of whether video games can be classified as art has been a subject of debate, and this debate has only enriched perspectives. While it is true that video games are creative works that draw elements from various artistic productions such as cinema, painting, music, and more, it is also true that they are part of an industry with its own manufacturing, consumption, and market processes. However, in this case, the word of experts can carry a lot of weight, and one of them asserts that they are indeed art.
Guillermo del Toro Answers the Most Important Question: Are Video Games Art?
Renowned Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro once again won over the gaming community by sharing a brief post on his official Twitter account. It features an image from the PlayStation game Shadow of the Colossus with the question "Are video games a form of art?" Del Toro responded simply with a "yes," an affirmation that was well-received by fans who share the idea that gaming has elements that allow it to be classified as art.
Guillermo del Toro's relationship with video games is well-known, especially his admiration for the work of Hideo Kojima, which was close to resulting in a horror title, Silent Hills. Following the cancellation by Konami, the filmmaker lashed out against the Japanese company, and every year, on the anniversary of the game that never was, he takes the opportunity to mock and insult the company.
Despite this, the outcome of this relationship is evident in the use of Guillermo del Toro's likeness in Death Stranding, the first video game Kojima created after leaving the Japanese company. On the other hand, due to the negative experience, Guillermo del Toro stated some time ago that he would not get involved with the video game industry again, so we will never know what he might have done in it.
