The Ninth Generation of consoles is just getting started after the challenges posed by the pandemic, but plans are already in motion for what comes next, and recently, interesting information was revealed about what Microsoft has in mind once Xbox Series X|S completes its cycle.
When will the new Xbox following Xbox Series X|S arrive?
Today, various documents (via Axios) were released as part of the lawsuit between Microsoft and the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King. One of them refers to a session between Microsoft executives and Xbox held in the spring of 2022, where the topic of the Tenth Generation of consoles and how the brand will position itself in it was discussed.
According to the details, this session was referred to as the 2028 Plan, both by the company and the game division. At least at that time, both pointed out that the goal is to launch the new Xbox at some point in 2028, which would mean an 8-year cycle for Xbox Series X|S. This timeframe is understandable from various angles, including the time lost due to the pandemic, which is only now being recovered. At the same time, this year, Xbox bid farewell to native Xbox One development, leaving behind the transition period between consoles. However, the release of the new Xbox will depend on market conditions, financial results, and developments in the sector.
The documents reveal that in this session, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft; Amy Hood, Chief Financial Officer, and Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, were present.
Will the new Xbox have a single model, or will there be at least 2 like Xbox Series X|S?
On the other hand, Anuj Gosalia, Corporate Vice President of Immersive Experiences, raised a question about hardware flexibility to meet the needs of and attract developers. In response, Kevin Gammill, Corporate Vice President of Gaming Ecosystems at Xbox, stated that this is a path they have already taken with Xbox One and Xbox One X, and now with Xbox Series X|S, suggesting they will continue with the same approach. This opens up the possibility that the next generation of Xbox will also have at least two models, and it's mentioned this way because the executive's statement even suggests that they should consider greater hardware flexibility, implying that they might release more models.
The revelation of these documents used in the lawsuit between Microsoft and the FTC also provided interesting details, such as Microsoft's reaction to the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 and their acknowledgment that Sony's console surpasses Xbox Series X|S in some aspects. Furthermore, it became public that Phil Spencer was a victim of the PS5 shortage as he couldn't secure one directly and had to purchase it as part of a much more expensive bundle put together by a store.
