Will There Be a Baten Kaitos III After the Remaster of Baten Kaitos I and Baten Kaitos II?

The sequel was close to happening but got canceled, leaving the series in oblivion

Lately, several companies that were once major players in the JRPG genre have been releasing remasters or remakes of forgotten franchises. This includes Bandai Namco, which is working on the remaster of the first two Baten Kaitos games. Does this project indicate that the company is planning to follow up with a third game? Well, it's best not to get too excited.

While the franchise may be a bit forgotten today, it was very close to having a third installment. Unfortunately, the last entry was in early development for the Nintendo DS and was ultimately canceled.

However, now that a dual remaster of the GameCube titles for Nintendo Switch has been announced, there's no better time for fans to feel that the revival of the IP is near.

Nevertheless, the project's producer, Koji Nakajima, has dashed the excitement by stating that there are no plans for a sequel at the moment. Their team is solely focused on the remaster.

"There are no plans for a sequel currently. Our focus at the moment is to ensure that this JRPG work created by great creatives in our industry is remastered, reaches players, and everyone enjoys it," the producer expressed in an interview with Nintendo Everything.

Will Baten Kaitos III Ever Become a Reality?

The producer's response is somewhat expected. In the best-case scenario, Bandai Namco is preparing the remaster as a gauge to see if the series, its gameplay, and visual style can captivate new audiences, making the development of a new iteration feasible. However, fan support will be needed first.

This is hopeful because something similar has happened with other series, and companies have been convinced to revive and work on new games.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that artist Yasuyuki Honne, who was involved in Baten Kaitos III and is now a member of Monolith Soft, has expressed his desire to work on the series again.
