The hybrid console is chasing records set by the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2

The Nintendo Switch continues to thrive and make history, confirming that the Japanese company managed to bounce back after the failure of the Wii U and returned with an unexpected vengeance to reclaim the top spot. The hybrid system is in its final stage but continues to sell very well thanks to significant exclusive releases, and at this point, it's all about breaking records by aiming at the best-selling consoles, just as it's happening in the United States.

Switch Surpasses Wii in the United States

The analysis firm Circana, formerly NPD Group (via Gamesindustry.biz), revealed its report regarding the commercial state of the video game industry from July 2022 to July 2023. While the report sheds light on the current situation of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the market, the case of the Nintendo Switch deserves a special mention, as it has achieved something historic. According to the information, the performance of the Switch in 2023 has been strong, thanks to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This means that the hybrid console is still selling very well, albeit not at its peak.

The Nintendo Switch Aims for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 Records in the USA

However, this is enough to set records, and in this regard, Circana reports that the Nintendo Switch has already surpassed Wii sales in the North American market, a milestone achieved in July of the previous year. According to estimates, the Wii sold 41 million units in the USA, while the Switch has now reached 42 million units.

The increasing number of units of the Switch sold, especially in important markets, also puts Nintendo's console in pursuit of two significant achievements. According to this report, Switch's sales put it on track to surpass the sales record of the Xbox 360, estimated at 43 million units in this market, a milestone it will undoubtedly overcome. Additionally, the hybrid console can set its sights on the ultimate achievement, as the next target on the list is the PlayStation 2, with less than 5 million units separating them.
